FrameCycler DDS Fills the 2K
Gap at Passion Pictures
London Animation House Selects
IRIDAS
for Uncompressed Playback
London: June 13, 2008 ...
Passion Pictures, one of Europe's leading independent
animation companies, has placed FrameCycler Digital Daily
System at the heart of their workflow for review and image
analysis. In operation for 20 years already, the
award-winning facility was looking to smooth the transition
to HD broadcast content. Passion Pictures chose FrameCycler
DDS.
"Our whole pipeline was becoming
frame-based and we desperately needed a review system,
especially for longer sequences at 2K or higher," said Neil
Riley, VFX supervisor at Passion. "The length of time it
took to get material to the editing suite was becoming an
issue."
After in-house testing, Passion
made the decision to purchase in March 2008 and hasn't
looked back since. "FrameCycler DDS has made review so much
faster and simpler," according to Riley. "Our directors love
it: they can see work immediately, make changes on the fly,
compare takes, and even make color adjustments."
Passion Pictures uses a
production company model and works with a roster of
directors who lead projects from concept through delivery.
"We're recognized for our strengths in all styles of
character animation," explained Riley, "and managing the
whole project has allowed us to develop our skills in
story-telling to a degree we are quite proud of." Passion
Pictures has done groundbreaking work for music videos such
as the Gorillaz and Coldplay, for major advertising
campaigns such as Sony Bravia, Adidas and Coke Zero.
Passion's multi-award winning Film & TV department premiered
three new films at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, where
'In The Shadow Of The Moon' won The World Cinema Audience
Award.
FrameCycler's review and
analysis tools are being put to good use, supporting the
high standards at Passion Pictures. "We love the tool set.
The ability to zoom into any part of the image, or use
multiple image windows, is a great help for efficient
quality control," explained Neil Riley. "We haven't found
anything to be lacking in this application. And that's
rare!"
