SpeedGrade DI Scores a Hat
Trick
to Start 2008
IRIDAS Helping Filmmakers Win
at the Festivals and the Box Office
Munich: February 6, 2008 ... SpeedGrade DI
has started the New Year in style with a trio of successes
for films completed with IRIDAS' high-end film finishing
application. "Captain Abu Raed," written and directed by
Amin Matalqa won the World Cinema Audience Award at the
Sundance Film Festival and Rachid Hami's "Choisir d’aimer"
was awarded the Prix du Public at the Festival of Angers.
During the same month, U2 3D, which also debuted at
Sundance, has been pushing the boundaries of what we think
film can be while it sets per-theater attendance records.

"Three films finished in SpeedGrade DI came out in January
2008 and each one has made its mark already," said Steve
Crouch, director of IRIDAS USA. "It's been a great
coming-out party for SpeedGrade: each film is a study in
what this system can do."
Captain Abu Raed was shot on ARRI D20 cameras and finished
at Gigapix Studios. The film uses distinctive color moods to
convey themes and characters in the story. "I just love what
[colorist Mark Read] did with the images," said director
Amin Matalqa, "I felt like I could stare at them forever."
Shot on 16 mm film and scanned at 2K, "Choisir d’aimer" was
finished on SpeedGrade DI in a remarkable four days at
Amazing Digital Studios in Paris. "Even the committee at the
Festival was blown away by the image quality of this film.
It doesn't look like 16 mm at all," said Frederic Savoir,
technical director at the facility.
SpeedGrade DI with DualStream, for stereo playback, was put
to the test on pre-finishing work for U2 3D, the remarkable
new concert film from 3ality Digital Systems. "With
SpeedGrade DI and DualStream I can finally work with all of
the components of a stereo movie in the same workspace,"
said Price Pethel, director of postproduction. "Color
grading all of the stereo elements and being able to see
content in real-time the way the audience will see it is
crucial."
"It's a privilege to contribute to the success of artistic
and technical achievements such as these," said Lin Kayser,
IRIDAS founder and CEO. "We're seeing a tremendous upswing
in interest in SpeedGrade DI as more and more filmmakers
come to recognize the power and flexibility of this
application."
SpeedGrade DI, a real-time grading solution offering primary
and secondary color correction, conform, FX, and a full set
of film finishing tools, runs on Mac OS X and Windows XP.
