Goes Slow Dancing
IRIDAS Provides Playback and Color Correction
for New David Michalek Art Installation
Munich: July 12, 2007 ... IRIDAS, who introduced the
first software solution for uncompressed playback in 2001,
is supplying the playback and color correction technologies
used in David Michalek’s Slow Dancing art installation. The
piece, projected outdoors onto three 50-foot screens in
front of the New York State Theater, runs from July 12
through 27. A customized edition of FrameCycler VenueSystem
is providing playback and real-time color adjustments during
the exhibition.
Slow Dancing is collage of short sequences showcasing
elite dancers from around the world. Each dancer was filmed
at extremely high speed with the Phantom camera; the
finished pieces are played back in hyper-slow motion.
FrameCycler VenueSystem provides the advantages of full
resolution playback and pristine picture quality on large
screens. “I am a perfectionist when it comes to color and
image,” said artist David Michalek. “I did a shoot-out using
the same sequence and projector to compare uncompressed
frames, using FrameCycler VenueSystem, and state-of-the art
encoding of the same data. As the size of the projected
image grew, it was clear that uncompressed HD was meatier,
had more texture, more detail. The image had more life to
it. The point is that the IRIDAS approach allows me to hold
onto my data.”
IRIDAS’ SpeedGrade was used in postproduction. “For color
adjustments we used SpeedGrade .Look files. The beauty of
.Look files is that we could create individual grades and
apply them selectively to each sequence rather than having
to do a universal correct. That allowed me to approach each
piece differently.”
A key advantage of non-destructive, GPU-base color
correction is that it can applied live – without affecting
the original content. “One of the challenges we face with
Slow Dancing is the changing ambient light conditions,”
explained David Michalek. “To maintain image fidelity, we
need a way to respond to that variable in real time. With
IRIDAS I can apply real-time color adjustments during the
performances. Nothing else will let me do that.”
Slow Dancing is being shown every evening from 9:00 pm to
1:00 am on the façade of the New York State Theater July 12
– 27, 2007. FrameCycler VenueSystem is part of the
FrameCycler family of uncompressed playback applications.
