History

IRIDAS was founded in 2000. Its first application was a freeware flipbook for playing frame-based content. The product caught on quickly in the VFX community and user feedback led to FrameCycler Studio Edition, the first software-based playback technology for uncompressed content, released in April 2001.

As this product evolved into FrameCycler Professional, the need for playback of longer sequences became clear. This paved the way for the development of FrameCycler DDS (Digital Daily System), which provided direct-from-disk playback, made possible by the new IHSS format. FrameCycler DDS was first used at ESC Entertainment in 2002 for postproduction work on the Matrix sequels and soon adopted by many other facilities.

IRIDAS' growing expertise in playback technologies led to the development of FrameCycler VenueSystem for location-based entertainment, museums, and educational institutions; 3D projection technologies; playback systems specifically for scientific research; as well as automation technologies to help postproduction facilities integrate their workflows (SequencePublisher, ReviewLink etc.).

Today FrameCycler is the industry standard for reviewing frame-based content. It is still the only uncompressed playback technology to run on all three major operating systems, Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux - and stands alone in its ability to read and write virtually any file format in use. Artists and facilities also value the open design of the software which lends itself to pipeline integration through scripting and a powerful command line syntax.

Early on, IRIDAS saw the potential for GPU pixel-shader technologies for postproduction work. SpeedGrade RT was introduced in 2003 - the first non-destructive color grading application in the film industry. The advantage of this approach is that all color adjustments remain fully editable until final rendering

SpeedGrade DI, IRIDAS flagship film finishing application, was launched in 2004. Building on the inherent strengths of software-based color grading, a new application called SpeedGrade HD (2007) provides conform and color grading for QuickTime content.

The SpeedGrade applications save grading as XML-based metadata files. The SpeedGrade .Look files are extremely small so they are easy to distribute. SpeedGrade OnSet, launched in 2005, uses the same .Look file format providing a simple and inexpensive means for establishing looks and sharing these with others in production and postproduction. Thus the SpeedGrade color pipeline offers an effective link from cinematographer to colorist - and everyone in between.

In 2004 IRIDAS USA was founded to meet the needs of the US markets and the Los Angeles area in particular. IRIDAS cultivates strong ties with its partners and, through its network of resellers has a presence in all the markets around the world. Future growth will continue to come from the film industry, as well as the growing markets for location-based entertainment, museums, and visual simulation.

IRIDAS has its head office in Munich, Germany, along with offices in Los Angeles and Toronto.
